Hey Derek, the way this project is going is that we chose two short stories that we all voted upon.
The first short story is called "The Sunbird" by Neil Gaiman which is about a group of rich, aristocratic foodies that eat all kinds of bizarre strange delicacies that go on a journey to Egypt to eat the last thing on their list of creatures they could possibly consume, the Phoenix/Sunbird. It's pretty cool.
The second story is called "Urashima Taro", its an old Japanese folk tale about a fisherman that saves a turtle from being tortured by children and in exchange for his kind act is invited to an underwater kingdom. He marries the underwater princess but then realizes he left his family behind, comes back to the surface and finds its 300 years later.
Each person participating chooses between one of the stories and does a series of visual development, be it character design, isometrics, environments, moment pieces, then we meet up at school (in the maya lab, haha) and do a crit and have a work day, meeting usually twice a week.
We are now moving onto a new set of stories, but everyone is welcome to keep working on what they have here. The idea of this whole endevour is to get better and badass.
Anyway, about my piece, I did an environment and isometric study of where the gourmands have their secret meeting place. I decided to set their homebase in a secret medicine shop that's behind a kiosk in a market place in Hong Kong because naturally, they eat all kinds of weird stuff. So I just wanted to establish the area outside of my creepy interior (not finished yet).
Hi Derek! Thanks for looking at our work. I chose 'The Sunbird' by Neil Gaiman for my story. My goal was to design the coffee shop (interior and exterior) and flesh out props for it. The coffee shop is located in Cairo, so one of my major concerns was for that locale to come across.
Hey Derek, this is Amy. I tend to struggle a lot with architectural type pieces as well as environments... Composing shots can be difficult since I have a hard time deciding on how to compose things to make it read/make sense. I hope to improve on environments overall
Just to clarify, Derek. The Coffee Shop in Egypt is where the gourmands meet to capture the Sunbird. Apparently there's a BBQ pit behind this particular coffee shop that's made of an ancient egyptian stele.
Hey Derek, this is kevin yang! The project im working on is the fire bird. I haven't gone far with project due to summer trips! haha. But my intent was for backgrounds, figuring out the composition. I also plan to figure out the props in the environments. I would like to do more, once i get the first moment down. Any feedback on how my process is or just how my pieces are working would be helpful. Thanks!!
Hi Derek! This is Peter Millar. Thanks so much for looking at our work, we all really appreciate it!! I miss your class! I hope all is well. Anyway, for my project I chose the sunbird story. I decided to focus on the design of the sunbird itself and some prop designs will be forthcoming. I wanted to make the bird seem majestic and magical, but also feel like it could actually exist. I also had the idea that the bird could turn into a half woman half bird, but I'm still working on that. Any comments/suggestions you might have about my process or painting technique would be super helpful. Thanks again!
Sweet drawings! Can I ask what your individual goals are? Is this the same story you're all doing or are you choosing your own thing?
